Setting Up PremierVPN (OpenVPN) on an ASUS Router

Many ASUS routers — including the ROG Rapture series (e.g. GT-AC5300) — can connect to PremierVPN using OpenVPN, routing your devices through the VPN at the router level. This guide uses VPN Fusion, the ASUS VPN client.

Important: Use VPN Fusion, not VPN Server. VPN Server turns your router into a VPN host (for incoming connections); it is not used to connect out to PremierVPN. If you're on the VPN Server (PPTP/OpenVPN/IPSec) page, you're in the wrong place.

Step 1: Download your OpenVPN config

  1. Log in to the PremierVPN Client Portal and open the Servers page.
  2. Choose the location you want.
  3. Download the OpenVPN UDP config (.ovpn). Use TCP only if UDP fails to connect.
  4. Save the file somewhere you can reach from the computer you use to manage the router.

Step 2: Open VPN Fusion

  1. In the router admin panel, click VPN in the left-hand menu.
  2. Open the VPN Fusion tab (next to VPN Server and Instant Guard).
  3. Click Add profile (the +) to open the connection dialog.

Step 3: Choose OpenVPN and enter your details

  1. At the top of the dialog, select the OpenVPN tab (alongside PPTP and L2TP).
  2. Fill in the fields:
    • Description: any name you like, e.g. PremierVPN UK
    • Username and Password: your VPN username and password from your PremierVPN dashboardnot your portal login email and password.
  3. Click Import the .ovpn file (or Browse) and select the .ovpn file you downloaded in Step 1. Wait for the upload to confirm.
  4. Click OK to save the profile.

Step 4: Connect

  1. The new profile appears in the Server List at the bottom of the VPN Fusion page.
  2. Toggle it On (or set it as the active connection).
  3. The status will change to connected once the tunnel is established.

Step 5: Verify

From a device on the router, visit any "what is my IP" website. It should show the PremierVPN server's location, not your home IP address.

Routing specific devices (optional)

VPN Fusion routes traffic by rule. By default it may only send certain devices through the tunnel rather than your whole network. After connecting, review the VPN Fusion device/client rules to choose exactly which devices use the PremierVPN tunnel and which use your normal connection.

Troubleshooting

The connection won't establish Try the TCP config instead of UDP — TCP uses port 443 and gets through more restrictive networks.

Authentication fails Make sure you're using your VPN credentials from the dashboard, not your portal login. Re-check for typos or trailing spaces.

Connects then drops, or certificate errors Check the router's date and time are correct. A wrong clock breaks the TLS certificate check and prevents the tunnel from forming.

One server is slow or won't connect Download and import a different server location's config to rule out a single busy server.

The router rejects the .ovpn import Your firmware's OpenVPN client may be older than the config. Contact support with the server config you used and we'll provide a router-compatible version.
