Connect Using IKEv2 on Windows (Native)

Windows 10 and 11 have a built-in IKEv2 VPN client — no additional software is required.

Add a VPN Connection

1. Open Settings (press Win + I).
2. Go to Network & Internet → VPN.
3. Click "Add a VPN connection" (or "Add VPN" on Windows 11).
4. Fill in the fields:
   • VPN provider: Windows (built-in)
   • Connection name: PremierVPN UK (or any name)
   • Server name or address: uk.premiervpn.net (or your preferred location)
   • VPN type: IKEv2
   • Type of sign-in info: Username and password
   • Username: Your VPN username (from your dashboard)
   • Password: Your VPN password
5. Click "Save".

Connect

1. Click the network icon in your taskbar (bottom right).
2. Click your VPN connection name.
3. Click "Connect".
4. You'll see "Connected" when the VPN is active.

Disconnect

Click the network icon → click the VPN connection → "Disconnect".

Setting IKEv2 Security (Recommended)

By default, Windows may use weaker security settings. To enforce stronger encryption:

1. Open Control Panel → Network and Sharing Center.
2. Click "Change adapter settings" on the left.
3. Right-click your VPN connection → "Properties".
4. Go to the "Security" tab.
5. Set:
   • Type of VPN: IKEv2
   • Data encryption: Require encryption
   • Authentication: Use Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) → EAP-MSCHAPv2
6. Click OK.

To switch locations, create a new VPN connection with a different server address, or edit the existing one.

FAQs

I get "The remote connection was not made because the attempted VPN tunnels failed."

This usually means the server hostname is incorrect or your firewall is blocking UDP ports 500 and 4500. Check that your server address is correct and that your network allows IKEv2 traffic.

Does IKEv2 reconnect automatically when I switch networks?

Yes. IKEv2 has built-in MOBIKE support, which means it seamlessly reconnects when you switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data or between Wi-Fi networks — without dropping your session.

Should I use IKEv2 or WireGuard?

Both are excellent. IKEv2 has the advantage of being built into Windows with no additional software. WireGuard is generally faster but requires installing the WireGuard app. For simplicity, IKEv2 is ideal; for maximum speed, use WireGuard.
